7012: Digital Storytelling

“Regardless of the medium, creators need to be good storytellers—and understand the scholarly work that engages with the contours of storytelling.”

Anandam Kavoori

For the Spring 2021 semester, Digital Storytelling focused on storytelling on digital mediums such as film, video games, and social media. The course focuses on the theoretical perspective of storytelling. Professor Kavoori spilt the semester into seven modules.

  1. Letter Writing
  2. Music Video Analysis
  3. Film Analysis
  4. Documentary Analysis
  5. YouTube and Social Media Analysis
  6. Video Game Analysis
  7. Smart Phone Creative Project

We read books, academic texts, and scholarly essays for each module such as The Aesthetics of Music Video: An analysis of Madonna’s Cherish and Understanding Video Games. We also watched films, documentaries, video game plays, music videos, and YouTube videos for each module.

We wrote short, 5-page essays for the Film Analysis and YouTube and Social Media Analysis sections. We also wrote manifestos for The Next Social Media platform and wrote film reviews. We wrote a 8-12 page essay for the Music Video Analysis, Documentary Analysis, and Video Game Analysis modules.

A Creative Representation Project: For the final project, we read a short text on mediatization of the fourth screen. We could choose any medium (text, photos, or video) to create the representation of our relationship with our smartphones. I created a video about smart phones and dependency.
